The primary purpose of seals is to contain fluid and/or exclude foreign materials.
Seals fit into two functional classes, dynamic and static.
- Dynamic seals are found primarily in applications with either radial or reciprocal movement. Seal designs take into consideration the properties of these movements and match operating functions to each.
- Static seals are, for the most part, barriers or dams to restrict fluid movement. Most applications rely on a compressed element fixed between two surfaces. Gaskets and O-Rings are the most popular seals in this group.
